| This is a relatively new name to the Rock Progressive scene, but there is a potentially huge songwriting talent at work here! Balance Of Risk is his debut album and a glowing example of the Glasgow born keyboard player s songwriting and arranging abilities it certainly is! The album is positively riddled with fine examples of Johnstone s songwriting talents, including some of the strongest ballads we have encountered in ages In the main, this is an album of superb songs with strong melodies, meaningful lyrics and more hooks that you throw your hat at! Melody is one of the album s strongest points as so many of them seem to stick after just one play! Brian Johnstone, is a huge ELP fan and also lists among his influences other great names like Yes, Toto, Pallas, Genesis, Go West, Cutting Crew and Billy Joel, all acts that are renowned for the strength of melody within their music, so that line-up must indicate that songwriting must rate high on this man s musical priorities and Balance Of Risk is a creditable confirmation of this observation The album features 12 tracks (including 1 instrumental) The opener Second Chance could be mistaken for a new Pallas track with it s hard biting keyboard introduction, pulsing bass-line and powerful driving percussives - the song has a great hook like in the chorus too | ||
